  Business Development Opportunity
Currently, the construction of a $700M Family Vacation Resort is underway in the Village West area of Wyandotte County. Known as the Schlitterbahn development, there will be an ongoing need and opportunity for small, women, minority and locally owned business enterprises throughout its construction phase.

Turner Construction is the general contractor and it is their responsibility to identify and offer subcontracting opportunities to M/W/LBEs. To get your foot into the door of doing business with this friendly firm, the Turner School of Construction Management hosts a program for M/W/DBE firms throughout the year. Space is limited to 40 participants and a firm must be selected based off of other criteria as found on the attachment. Beyond the opportunity to learn about Turner's expectations of contractors they do business with, participants learn to locate resources within the construction industry, identify challenges of being a contractors, define necessary elements for being a contractor, and describe the fundamentals of estimating.

A completed registration form must be completed and turned in by Feb. 20, 2008 and sessions will begin March 4th. Classes are in the evenings on Tuesday from 6-8pm and there is no cost to selected participants. For more information about Turner Construction's Construction Management program for M/W/DBEs, call Teresa Reiling at 816-283-0555. Only individuals comitted to attending all sessions are encouraged to inquire and participate.

IBSA, a nonprofit training provider of entrepreneurial development and support services to aspiring business owners will be coordinating their WIA funded program to coincide with Turner's construction management training. The agency can provide course work to complete a feasibility and functional business plan, assist in homework assignments, help review and prepare request for bid documents and assist in other development areas as needed. For information on completing Turner's program in conjunction with IBSA's program call 913-240-6247 or by email at ibsakc@myway.com
