Top 10 Things Every Site Should Include

While almost anyone can have a web site these days it's much harder to have a good website. From design aspects to readable content many sites fall flat. Below I've arranged a Top 10 list, because everyone loves a Top 10!

Include a detailed About Us page The About Us page is a good place for new visitors and target traffic to find out who you are, why they should read your content or buy your products, how valuable your site can be, and also general information about your company, web site, or you.

It's a good idea to include contact information or at least a clear link to your Contact Us page. Keep concise and accurate. People want to read about you but they don't want a novel. Add important information on this page and point them to other pages for more in depth coverage.

Include a Contact Us page Visitors (shoppers, target traffic) need an easy way to get in touch. Have a clearly marked link for contact information and include every avenue you receive communication through. Telephone and fax numbers (both local and 800), e-mail addresses, physical addresses, etc. all should appear on this page.

To help navigate further, clearly indicate which contacts go where (i.e. Admin, Tech, Sales, etc.) This will decrease frustration on both ends and allow better communication to flow. You want to show your visitors that you are competent and friendly, being easy to contact is one of the best ways to accomplish this goal.

Add a News, Press Release, Blog, and/or Articles Page These pages inform customers of current events, products, endorsements, and other company happenings all in one place. Make sure to maintain these pages with fresh content that is reader friendly so your target traffic is more likely to come back, bookmark your page, and they may even provide word-of-mouth advertising. Free advertising!

As a bonus, search engines love these types of pages. New, fresh, relevant content is the stuff of search engines (well, there's obviously more to it than just content). Each time a search engine spider crawls your site and find new content it ups your chances of ranking higher in the organic search listings. More free advertising!

A Relevant Page Title As uninteresting as this may sound your page title holds a lot of weight. If you're unfamiliar with a page title it is the name appearing in the blue bar across the top of the page. If your says something like "Untitled Document" I'm talking to you.

Page titles should be different for every page in your site. They should clearly and accurately describe your page, and you should try to use keywords in the page title.

Search engines display the title of your page on SERPs. The catchier and more accurate your title the better the chance you'll hit target traffic.

A Relevant Page Name Again, not so interesting as flashy designs or up-to-the-minute content, but it's a necessity to get your target traffic to your page to see or read the goods.

It's better to have straightforward page name showing in the URL than names with ? or other symbols and numbers. For example, a search engine will go to www.yourdomain.com/about us.htm it will only go to the ? in www.yourdomain.com/aboutus?094837 . You want search engines to find your pages. You also want humans to be able to read your names. Keep it simple and clean.

Good Grammar, Correct Spelling, Complete Thoughts, Sentence Structure Everything you were supposed to learn in grade school, use it now. Not only should your site have relevant content - the more the better - people should be able to read your content. Choppy or runon sentences that seem to go nowhere cannot provide the type of readership concise, correct sentences can.

Misspellings, wrong word usage, bad grammar are all distractions. You do not want to distract your readers, you want to captivate them. Slang and derogatory language also distracts. If your site is a business site avoid slang and offensive language all together - unless that's your selling point. Jargon is different, just don't confuse readers more than necessary.

If you aren't in command of grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, etc. or if you'd rather focus your efforts elsewhere, that's fine. It's a good idea to beg, plead, hire, or force someone else to take care of this part then as ignoring the problem won't make it go away though it may have that effect on site traffic.

Professional Design, Colors, and Images Design should be implemented with usability in mind. Not all visitors will be as web savvy as you'd like, create easy navigation and links to all your pages. A search bar for your site is also a good idea.

Colors should be inviting, not blinding. Use colors to emphasize your brand, product or content. Don't overpower the visitor with colors. Use colors to make text pop without being distracting or hard to read.

Images should be friendly and relevant to your site. Images of people work better than objects and clip art rarely has a positive effect. Make sure your images can load within a reasonable amount of time, you don't want to lose visitors because a single image caused an incredible amount of load time, or worse froze the visitors browser.

Make Sure ALL Links Are Working Links This should be a no-brainer, however it is always a good idea to check and double check your links. Fix any broken links A.S.A.P. Your reputation counts on it.

Think of any site you've been to with a broken link. Disappointing isn't it? You probably left or at least had a negative image about the company. Avoid this mistake and check, recheck, and check your links again.

Use Your Log Files Log files offer a plethora of information on your web site, your visitors, what works and what doesn't. You can't afford to miss out on this information - if you can afford it you shouldn't anyway.

Best idea: Get a program that converts the lengthy text into readable documentation. It'll save you time and energy while getting you the information you desire. Log files will describe customer behavior, they will show you broken links, and you'll see where customers flow freely and where they abandon the site. The invaluable information is at your finger tips. Use it!

SSL (Secure Socket Layer) Certificates These can be used on any site asking for sensitive information. Not every web site needs this, however if you plan to collect any visitor information it is a good idea to have some SSL pages. Though not every page need be SSL.

Pages requiring e-mail, names, telephone numbers, addresses, credit card information, social security information or any other information visitors may not readily be giving up online should be securely collected via SSL.

The Kaiser Family Foundation and The Washington Post on July 18 hosted a forum in the Foundation's Barbara Jordan Conference Center featuring Bill Cosby and a panel of national leaders examining the experiences of young black men in America.

The forum, Paths to Success: A Forum on Young African-American Men, addressed the results of a major new national survey conducted by The Washington Post, the Kaiser Family Foundation and Harvard University. The discussion focused on strategies to enable young black men to succeed in America today and built on themes presented in the Post's series, "Being a Black Man."

Community Entrepreneurship for Youth? Community Entrepreneurship: To turn communities around, training programs must teach a double bottom line Good article to read.... Your thought? If a new model of entrepreneurship that benefits the inner city is to emerge, it must come from community-minded activists, philanthropists, and small businesspeople. And while the spread of nonprofit entrepreneurial training programs for low-income Americans is a hopeful development, most of these programs still fail to link business development with community development. It's therefore all the more important that we ask tougher questions of our fellow community activists who are promoting business training for young people.

Consider, for a moment, NFTE's widely publicized work, which typifies the strengths and weakness of most entrepreneurship training programs. Businessman Steve Mariotti founded the group in 1987 with a mission "to teach low-income youth the basics of starting their own business by creating curriculum, training teachers, and providing graduate services." Endorsed by a broad spectrum of CEOs, public figures, and politicians, including many liberals like former New York Mayor David Dinkins, NFTE has an annual budget of $5 million and boasts some 20,000 "graduates." Yet what exactly is NFTE teaching?

To find out, I purchased nearly $200 worth of their guides, workbooks, and study modules. On the inside cover of How to Start and Operate a Small Business: NFTE Fundamentals is the old quote of Lao Tzu: "Give a man a fish and you feed him for a day. Teach a man to fish and you feed him for a lifetime." Looking for evidence that NFTE was teaching community-friendly entrepreneurship, I then perused the materials with three questions in mind:

What kinds of goods and services are being produced? Are the new businesses producing fish genuinely needed by the hungry in the community, or Pet Rocks and Saturday Night Specials? The business example used by NFTE throughout its materials is T-shirt silkscreening. The only important question, according to NFTE, is that the product "must satisfy a need of the consumer," not the myriad needs of the community.

How are the goods and services produced? If you learn how to be a fisherman, will you also learn the importance of paying livable wages and giving health-care coverage to your employees, or of taking care not to dump garbage into the spawning grounds for the fish? The NFTE materials have a section on "ethical business behavior," but the focus is on ensuring that customers feel you are punctual, reliable, courteous, and well dressed, and that employees do not feel "used" – no mention is made of the role of wages or benefits.

Finally, who owns the fishing gear and the pond? Is the ownership local, or is it a branch of Starkist Inc. with little commitment to the community? The NFTE guides states: "Businesses come in three basic legal structures: The sole proprietorship, the partnership, and the corporations." But the business structures with the most proven loyalty to a community – cooperatives, municipally owned, and community stock-held companies – are not even mentioned.

I don't mean to single out NFTE, because most entrepreneurship programs do exactly the same thing: present a simplified version of a business school curriculum, where students are taught to maximize personal gain – period. It's hard to object to the poor making more money, but for low-income communities to truly benefit from business development, the other three goals for community well-being should be taught as well: businesses should be attentive to the what, how, and who of production. While much has been written about the importance of the how of production – that is, labor and environmental standards – the what and who elements warrant brief elaboration.

http://www.nhi.org/online/issues/107/shuman.html

==========================================================================

EXAMPLE: the Detroit Farmers Cooperative, which operates seven community gardens and five neighborhood-based markets, all run by seven young African Americans, 14 to 16 years old. And the Hope Takes Root program, also in Detroit, employs homeless men to grow food for local meals programs for the poor.

Second, a community that moves toward self-reliance is often rewarded with a higher economic multiplier. Economists sometimes assert that a community should be indifferent about whether a new enterprise produces $100,000 worth of apples for export or $100,000 worth of apples consumed locally, since each injects $100,000 of productive activity into the local economy. There is a difference, however. In both cases, the producer realizes $100,000 of gain and re-spends it in the local economy. In the latter case, however, consumers also spend $100,000 locally that they otherwise would have had to spend outside the city to import apples. Every time a community chooses to import an item it could just as easily make for itself, it's giving away another piece of its multiplier.

Finally, a self-reliant community enjoys greater tax receipts. Again, the business taxes from the $100,000 exporter and the $100,000 import-replacer are identical. But in the latter case, the higher economic multiplier in the rest of the community means that taxes from other enterprises in the city will be higher. Plus, the city can enjoy sales tax (the U.S. constitution bans sales tax on interstate or international commerce). Higher tax revenues mean better schools, police, roads, and so forth.

EXAMPLE: Positive examples of entrepreneurship training programs sensitive to community do exist, though they lack the large budgets, corporate sponsors, and high media profile of mainstream programs. Take youth credit unions. More than a dozen programs in the country teach young people how to run community banks. The D.E. Wells Youth Credit Union, started in 1988, now has over a thousand members 18 and younger. The president of the Youth Credit Union Development Project in North Carolina is 12 years old. Since community development credit unions, by their legal charter, must provide local loans and are owned by the members who live in the community, they embody and teach the principles of community entrepreneurship.

  Blogging: The Web Alternative

Have you heard about 'blogs' but really don't know what they are? Is blogging a foreign concept to you and your business? Are you unsure how blogging can help your business or organization?  Well, don't feel like the lone stranger.

Blogging has taken on a life of its own and is now a very useful tool a business can use to establish an effective web presence in a non-traditional way. Blogs allow for the owner/moderator to setup a place on the net whereas they have a great deal of control over the content and frequency of new content. You can even email your post to your blog and they will automatically be categorized in an archive, you can use pictures and html codes, it is very search friendly, and with new technology, you can now add podcasts, video and audio for free. In addition, you can invite other trusted writers and researchers to provide you content for your post either directly or through moderated posting.

With a blog you can also feed the articles to your existing website as 'xml' or 'RSS' so that visitors to your site can click on a title and go and read your articles. If you are in a network of businesses, clubs or associations, others can also feed your articles into their website.

Blogs can be used for those who research, retail businesses, organizations and clubs,

EXAMPLE:

2. Get a domain name
3. Set it up to redirect to your blog.
(so if you type in www.yourbusiness.com, it will redirect straight to your blog)
4. Post as often as you like, Invite other authors to post to your site, Add Audio/Video!

Cut web-hosting fees and the cost to pay a webmaster to update and refresh information to your site on an ongoing basis

  African Americans 'Dread'
Tunis Hebdo, Tunisia African Americans 'Dread' Growing Power of Latinos

By T.H. Translated By Sandrine Ageorges June 5 – June 11 Issue

In August 1963, 250,000 people marched on Washington to demand jobs and freedom for millions of black Americans. Is the movement to legalize Latinos undercutting the achievements of these earlier protesters? (above). May 1 protest in Los Angeles. Are Latinos somhow supplanting Blacks? (below) Three students from Clinton High School picket their school as it becomes the first state-supported school in Tennessee to integrate, August 1956. (above) . ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The United States, as we all know, is a country of immigrants. Three main communities shape today's population: the Whites, the Blacks and the Latinos. If the first category is the most privileged in terms of civil rights, the other two communities have always more or less been marginalized, even if the Constitution grants them (on paper) equal rights and duties as their fellow fair-skinned citizens.

The social status quo that has been maintained during recent decades appears to be headed for turbulent times, and is likely to threaten the "home front." The vast protests held by Latinos during March and April to demand legalization for millions of underground immigrants is seen by some observers as a warning bell. And the warning is underlined by the new-found influence of America's Latino community. The law of numbers in the country of Uncle Sam - as is true everywhere - is a powerful influence on he politics of the State.

This boisterous demonstration of strength by this overwhelming human tide is a matter of great concern to the Black community. African-Americans seriously dread seeing a Latino breakthrough detrimental to their own social and economic situation, which is already regarded as serious. They especially fear that the programs and the reforms adopted in their favor during the 1960s, after the tremendous sacrifice and violence suffered by the Civic Rights Movement – will be abandoned - purely and simply to benefit the newer immigrants of Hispanic origin, relegating Blacks to the rank of third-rate citizens.

Blacks refuse to compare recent Latino protests to their movement in the 60's. African Americans recall that they weren't immigrants, but fully-fledged American citizens that took to the streets after suffering centuries of slavery, rape, lynching and discrimination. We didn't choose to come to the United States, we were brought here as slaves. And we were deprived of our basic rights although we were citizens of this country. Many of these problems have remained unresolved since the 60's. But now we may be relegated to the status of a secondary concern, said one Black university professor.

The Black community dreads above all that it will see its economic condition worsen due to competition from Latinos. In 2004, 72% of America's Black community between the ages of 20 and 30 having had abandoned high school and were unemployed, while only 19% of Hispanics were in a similar position. Latinos survive better because of their accommodating attitude toward employment, which fit in nicely with capitalist ethics: they accept working long hours at low salaries. They hardly ever complain and rarely avail themselves of the social protections that normal employees would.

To summarize, Black Americans are worried and are asking themselves: Will the power of Latino immigrants diminish the value of their secular struggle and speed their marginalization?

Mini-Sites - Highly Targeted Sales Generators
Mini-Sites – Highly Targeted Sales Generators

If you're looking for a highly effective method of increasing your Internet sales, then mini-sites may be your answer. Mini-sites are one of the most effective marketing tools online. Not only are they effective, but they're also very inexpensive and easy to create.

The concept is simple. Create a one or two page website that completely focuses on one specific product or service. Everything within that page should have one purpose -- getting the visitor to take action. This page should be neatly designed in standard HTML with no Flash or fancy plug-ins and very few graphics. There should be no banners or outside links of any kind and nothing that will distract your visitor's attention.

The sole purpose of a mini-site is to attract highly targeted traffic to your website. The more targeted the better. For example, if you have a website that sells a number of products, a good mini-site would focus on one specific product instead of all of the products. You could create a mini-site for each product you offer.

Designing A Mini-Site

Each mini-site you create should be optimized for that one specific product or service. Concentrate on just a few keyword phrases, as this will help you to tighten your targeting. Remember ... the tighter the targeting the better.

Killer Internet Marketing Strategies

Let us design your next Mini-Site and help market your product or service!

Common Concerns

Are you concerned that you…

  • Weren’t an education major?
  • Worked full time during college and could not commit as much time to extracurricular activities?
  • Have never been the president or founder of a campus organization?

Because leaders come in many forms with many past experiences, we do not look for a narrow profile, such as particular academic majors, specific leadership positions, or certain GPAs. Rather, we view applicants holistically, and look for the skills and strengths that we’ve determined over time lead to success in the classroom.

2005 Corps Profile

Over the past 15 years, over 14,000 individuals from all backgrounds and career interests have joined Teach For America and made the commitment to become lifelong advocates for change. Here is a profile of our 2005 corps.

Salaries Corps members are paid directly by the school districts for which they work and generally receive the same salaries and health benefits as other beginning teachers. While beginning teacher salaries vary by district, corps members find that they can live comfortably regardless of their placement site. Corps members teaching in urban sites typically have higher salaries, reaching a high of $44,000 and a low of $28,000. Corps members in rural sites, who make between $25,000 and $33,000, tend to have more discretionary income because the cost of living is disproportionately lower in these sites.

To find average salaries for beginning teachers in a specific region, click on Where would I teach, and go to the At a glance section within the region of interest.

  Escape from the Institutional Straightjacket
Escape from the Institutional Straightjacket "Most people don’t realize that they’re living in an artificially constructed world in which the only reason others have power over them is that they allow them to have the power. Most of the people who certify you are actually your competitors. It’s their job to impede your progress. Stop giving them permission. You do not wait for someone else to tell you it’s OK to be an expert, or innovate, or claim a title, or dispense advise. You just do it – and you let the laws of supply and demand take care of the rest. If you have this idea in your head that you need to wait for someone’s permission, you need to re-examine your assumptions, and the education that formed those assumptions"....... StartUp Kansas is a service of the Kansas Center for Entrepreneurship, through its Kansas Community Entrepreneurship Fund, all of which were established by the Kansas Legislature in 2004 through the Kansas Economic Growth Act. These programs are administered by the Kansas Department of Commerce, which provides oversight and managment under guidelines approved by the Secretary of Commerce. Entrepreneurs and existing small businesses may only access StartUp Kansas funding by working with their local or regional non-profit business support providers. Examples are the regional foundations (listed on this website), Main Street Kansas Organizations, Chambers of Commerce, economic development agencies and other non-profit organizations charged with assisting for-profit entrepreneurs and small businesses in Kansas.
