  The importance of a will
The importance of a will

As we know as unpleasant as it is that one day we are not going to be around forever, but what we leave behind to our loved ones is something that not only gives you a peace of mind but also give you the opportunity to establish a foundation for the future. As you also came to realize us as a resource for you to prepare yourself your family and generations to come.

Just think wouldn't things be different for our people if each one of us was able to leave behind something that would have helped us be better prepared financially for the challenges ahead? well this is what a will is for.

As Black people we need to not be afraid to get our house in order, as many of our people fear the hereafter and forget about the now. The Now is many times scarier then the hereafter. It is time to be realistic.

It is already difficult when you lose a loved one but it is extremely difficult when a persons affairs are not in order. Start preparing yourself and protect yourself and loved ones by establishing a will, this will give you a peace of mind and your loved ones will be grateful and appreciative for your foresight.

Are You Making These E-Commerce Excuses?
Are You Making These E-Commerce Excuses? (part 1)
By Jamila White, The E-Commerce Diva

A year ago, I had big plans to re-vamp my web site. I was going to publish my e-newsletter twice a month every month, and I was going to upgrade my own e-commerce capabilities. Those were my Internet marketingresolutions for 2005.

And I broke them all. Every single one. (One of them I broke even before the month of January was over!) For every goal, I had an excuse. And the excuses won.

But this year is different. It's 2006 time to get live!

Entrepreneurs Need A Professional Email Address

I recently acquired a leads lists and was shocked to see the names people use for email. Now, don't get me wrong, I know your choice of address is your call, but if you want to be taken seriously -- that is you want potential customers, clients, employers to contact you for whatever product or service you're offering or job you are seeking you should seriously consider getting an email address that represents you as a professional.

The reason why I acquired the list was I am looking for people who are seriously interested in working for themselves (full time or part time) and some of the names on the list I immediately didn't even bother to contact:

licktheback@

txgirl12002@

bigchops555@

scbeautyqueen2000@

redthang34@

nomnkyhr@

bombdiggity916@

booboolicious23

boodaphatdady@

The above addresses I omitted the domain -- the point is how serious are these individuals who apparently completed an online survey regarding their interest in seeking a business opportunity.

I personally believe having a vanity email address is the way to go. Use your name -- and it is really easy at GDI to do that using the .ws domain. For only $10 a month you can get a website, up to 10 email addresses -- one of which you can use when you want people to take you seriously -- so that leaves you 9 to get crazy and have fun with and the GDI business opportunity which includes a BackOffice website and personalized capture pages.

So, if you need a credible email address, if you need a website for personal or business use, if you want to generate income then check out the Global Domains Opportunity. Just visit http://Website.ws/idettev

We Are Looking for Foreign or local companies interested in partnering

"We are implementing a major strategic initiative aimed at regenerating America's inner cities, areas devastated by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita and attracting positive investment.

INTRODUCTION A successful comprehensive strategy for reconstruction after a major disaster must have as its catalyst an organized private sector initiative composed of local residents and the communities leaders, Small and Medium-sized Business Enterprises (SMBE's. They must be empowered so they can participate in government and privately funded construction contracts and programs.

OBJECTIVE To create synergistic relationships and empower Community Development Corporations, Community Grassroots Organizations, Minority Business Enterprises (MBEs), Small and Medium-sized Business Enterprises (SMBE's), construction, architectural and engineering firms and companies that come on board and joint venture with us to be able to procure and participate in the government and private sector funded Gulf Coast reconstruction contracts and inner-city community development programs.

GENERAL OVERVIEW Immediate focus is on residential and related commercial construction not only in the Gulf Coast region but in inner-cities around the country. These efforts are spearheaded by our PeaceZone.net Community member company, www.AmoroCorp.com Amoro Corporation is an African American owned company, whose founder and CEO Ephren W. Taylor II is considered a “high-performance visionary with the ability to make things happen, when nobody else can.

Amoro Corporation is a publicly-held investment development group dedicated to Empowering Communities with Socially Conscious Development. Amoro Corp has extensive expertise and focuses on creating affordable housing, especially in urban environments. PeaceZone.net's technology provides the added ability to integrate information and computer technology platforms into development projects and create wired communities.

The AmoroCorp team assembled by its CEO include, IBSA, ENUF, and the www.PeaceZone.net Biz Zone and its information communication technology (ICT) base represent over 275 years of expertise in construction project marketing, management & development, accounting, legal & business consulting, information technology, software development, and other key areas in training and certification.

Amoro brings to the table a proven track record of having worked closely with Economic Development Groups and Community Development Corporations across America creating successful commercial and residential development and redevelopment programs that have fulfilled client communities needs and objectives. Amoro Corp is capable, under the right circumstances, to lend a publicly traded instrument to a proposed joint venture allowing an easier raise of capital and the securing of a project's bonding requirements.

We present an African American group with the master plan for a private sector initiated reconstruction effort based on grassroots contacts and our unique understanding of the internal social and economic dynamics of the inner-cities of America and the Gulf Coast cities devastated by hurricanes Katrina and Rita.

Our group's resources and local market business intelligence can be leveraged for the benefit of contract procurement, implementation, and operations and management. We eliminate the guesswork and can source real-time strategic data on which to base responses to RFPs, RFAs. Teaming and empowered with qualified national or international joint venture partners we can procure and undertake major US government funded (IDIQ) Indefinite Deliver and Indefinite Quantity Contracts related to Katrina disaster reconstruction projects.

Foreign or local companies interested in partnering with our group on contracts already signed and to know about opportunities we have in the pipeline contact:

Dr. F. A. Young, Esq., Special Advisor to the Chairman of Amoro Corp & Executive Director, PeaceZone.net & Biz Zone Email: drfayesq@peacezone.net ===========================================

Any initiative to rebuild the infrastructure of the US Gulf Coast cities hit by Katrina and revive the private business sectors must include the empowerment of the communities residents so they can participate in the rebuilding of their homes and their businesses with dignity.   Prisoner Reentry Transition Center Opened - Nevada
Nevada Opens Prisoner Reentry Transition Center
Contact: Thomas MacLellan Social, Economic & Workforce Development Division

In an effort to support the goals of successful prisoner reentry, Governor Kenny Guinn announced the official opening of the Casa Grande Transitional Housing Facility in Las Vegas. Casa Grande, a state of the art residential facility, will provide services for up to 400 offenders preparing to transition from prison back into communities. Violent and sex offenders are not eligible for participation in the program.

The $23 million center is designed for prisoners who have been granted parole and are seeking employment. Individuals in the program will participate in a range of programs, including counseling, housing services, and employment training. Most will go to jobs during the day and return to Casa Grande at night. The program charges room and board of about $16 per day and individuals can remain in the program for up to four months.

The goal of Casa Grande is to reduce recidivism rates by half and avoid the costly churning of individuals moving in and out of prison. The facility is surrounded by about 1,000 warehouse, manufacturing and service businesses that the state hopes will employ many participants.

Identity Theft: Not Just Credit Card Fraud

    Marketing Associate

Identity Theft: Most people rely on their credit card companies to deal with fraudulent charges on their credit card. However, fraud on the credit card is just the beginning tip of the iceberg. Customers soon discover that they can not 'dispute' all charges and problems may linger for years as they need to fend off companies taking them to court. As soon as you discover that your credit card is used fraudulently:

  • Contact the credit card company immediately, and have them fax you all the authorizations that were done on that card, and the merchant contact information for those charges.
  • Contact each of the merchants so that they will stop the order (if possible), and alert the local authorities of the ShipTo address.
  • Ask the merchants, where the merchandise is being shipped to, and YOU telephone the local authorities too. Afterall, you do not want your information being reused months later.
  • Request that the card company issue you a new card with a different CC number. (Disputing a charge but keeping the same card # is very bad)
  • Reflect on where your credit card was used.
  • The numbers could have been gathered months before. Interestingly, most of the victims that we spoke with have never used a computer.

Fraud on your credit card, is usually just the beginning or symptom that your identity is known and being used by criminals.

If someone has used your personal identification to fraudulently estabilish credit, report the incident as quickly as possible to each of the credit reporting agencies and request that a fraud alert be placed on your file.

  • Experian ph# 888-397-3742
  • Equifax ph# 800-525-6285
  • Trans Union ph# 800-680-7289
  • Obtain a cop of your credit report from each of the credit reporting agencies. Check to see whether any additional accounts were opened without your consent or whether unauthorized charges were billed to your accounts. To request copies of your credit reports call:

  • Experian ph# 888-397-3742
  • Equifax ph# 800-685-1111
  • Trans Union ph# 800-916-8800
  • Additional Tasks:

  • Contact the Social Security Administration's Fraud Hotline at 800-269-0271 to report the unauthorized use of your personal identification information.
  • Contact your State Department of Motor Vehicles to see whether the Deptartment has issued and unauthorized license number in your name. If so, notify them you are a victim of identity theft.
  • File a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) by contacting the FTC's Identity Theft Hotline by telephone: 1-877-IDTHEFT (TDD: 202-326-2502); by mail: Identity Theft Clearinghouse, Federal Trade Commission, 600 Pennsylvania Avenue, NW, Washington DC 20580-0001 or online at: http://www.consumer.gov/idtheft/ .

"Identity theft is expanding and increasing every day," said Jodie Bernstein, director of the FTC's Bureau of Consumer Protection, during the first meeting of the President's Information Technology Advisory Committee. She said 2,000 calls per week poured into the FTC identity theft hotline last month alone. But less than 1% of all reported cases to date can be linked to the Internet, she said. The two most common causes are lost wallets or purses, and mail theft.
  • Article: 'Identity fraud' law reviewed Full Story on ComputerWorld computer magazine. Except: Somehow, someone got credit-card numbers and the social security number of Maureen Mitchell's husband. She first learned about the problem when a bank called her to report unusual credit-card activity. But the problems didn't stop for the Madison, Ohio, family. A department store and car dealers were issuing credit to people claiming to be Mitchell's husband.

    Cash Flow Calculator

The cash flow calculator will help you determine how much cash you will need to start a business. You can use the calculator for free. To use the cash flow calculator you first fill out three short forms which will build your Company's Start Up Statements. To build the start up statements you will need to know the following:

    • Your expenses related to starting the company.
    • The assets (cash, equipment, etc.) that you will invest in the company.
    • The money that you will owe for the assets listed above.

After you build the Start Up Statements you then forecast for your Company's first year of business. After you do this, forecast financial statements will be generated. The statements will show your companies cash balances for the first 12 months of business. To forecast the financial statements you must know the following:

    • The type of business your are in. You can select from a list of the following:
      • General Business
      • Accounting / CPA
      • Advertising / PR
      • Architecture
      • Construction / Contracting
      • Consulting

    • Your company's projected first month sales and expenses.
    • Your company's projected monthly growth rate.
    • The amounts and dates of any forecasted equipment purchases (i.e. instance, automobiles, manufacturing equipment, etc.)
    • The terms of your sales. If your company sells to other businesses, then you will likely have to offer your business customers credit terms. You will have to provide them will your Company's goods and/or services, then send them a bill and wait for them to pay you. Most retail businesses do not offer credit terms to individuals. You'll need to know the percentages of sales that will be sold on credit and how many days after the sale you will receive the money. Note: Don't confuse "credit card sales" with "credit sales". With credit card sales, the credit card company is offering your customer credit, but will immediately deposit the money in your company's bank account regardless of when or even if the customer ever pay their credit card bill.
    • The terms of your monthly expenses. Most venders offer businesses (your company) credit so you can pay for goods and services after you receive them. You will likely have to pay for rent in advance, but you might be able to negotiate 30, 60 or even 90 day terms for the inventory you stock..

When you are done entering the information, you will be able to see your company's monthly cash balances for its first year. If the cash balance is negative or below what you consider to be a safe amount, then you will need to either find equity investors or obtain a loan. The cash flow calculator will allow you to enter equity and/ or a loan.

Finally when your are done you can download the reports in excel or view them on line.

Below are the steps involved. Some steps you can just skip, but you should start at the top and work your way down.

We ask tougher questions of our fellow community activists????

    Interesting article...

Community Entrepreneurship By Michael H. Shuman While the spread of nonprofit entrepreneurship training programs for low-income Americans is a hopeful sign, to truly turn around low-income communities these programs must also teach the value of local ownership and socially useful goods and services.........

"If a new model of entrepreneurship that benefits the inner city is to emerge, it must come from community-minded activists, philanthropists, and small businesspeople. And while the spread of nonprofit entrepreneurial training programs for low-income Americans is a hopeful development, most of these programs still fail to link business development with community development. It's therefore all the more important that we ask tougher questions of our fellow community activists who are promoting business training for young people." http://www.nhi.org/online/issues/107/shuman.html

Flock - A FREE Web Browser

Flock: The web browser for you and your friends.

Flock is a free web browser that makes it easier than ever to share photos, stay up-to-date with news from your favorite sites, and search the Web. This first beta has a bunch of features that offer a glimpse at where we're headed:
    • Photos: Sharing photos is one of the main ways people connect with their friends online, and we believe Flock delivers a rich end-to-end experience for Flickr and PhotoBucket users.
      • Uploading: Getting pictures online doesn't have to be tedious. In Flock beta 1, users can simply drag pictures onto the Photo icon to upload them, batch upload with our photo uploader, or even drag and drop pictures onto any form field on the web (we'll store the picture on your Flickr or Photobucket account, then insert the appropriate HTML snippet into the form).
      • Discovery: On any web page (such as a Typepad blog, a MySpace page...), mouse over any public picture that's hosted on Flickr or Photobucket and we'll offer to show you the entire photostream in our photo topbar. And once you're there, you can scroll through thumbnails (including nice big ones) faster then ever before. It's fast and addictive!
      • Sharing: Right click any picture to blog it. Or drag a photo thumbnail into any comment field on the web. Or drag a picture from your desktop into a comment field. Then talk about it.
      • Notification: Keep a list of your photo buddies and Flock will tell you when your friends have new pictures. We'll import your Flickr friends list and let you add anyone on Flickr or Photobucket.
    • News: RSS made easy. With Flock you can preview any RSS feed, then easily add it to your RSS aggregator (we call it My News). You can then view new stories by feed, by category, or aggregated across all categories (our front page shows you today's headlines). We also tell you when you have new stories - keeping you up to date at all times.

It was formed to respond to the unique circumstances resulting from hurricanes Katrina and Rita, alleviate deficiencies in basic needs such as housing and job creation and help catalyze entrepreneurship education, research, policy development and growth throughout Louisiana.

Kick-off meetings are being held state-wide to introduce UEP to local business assistance providers. During the meetings, UEP intends to learn about local providers' activities and identify their needs.

Emergency Preparedness: Chance Favors the Prepared Business
As the saying goes, “chance favors the prepared mind,” or in this case, the prepared business. Louisianians learned first-hand last year that advance planning is a hurricane season imperative. One month into the 2006 Hurricane Season, businesses should ensure that they have taken necessary steps to protect their employees and their operations.

Advance planning can help businesses secure property, commerce and enable them to release or evacuate employees sooner in the event of an emergency. Louisiana Economic Development recommends the following hurricane season checklist.

    Develop a Plan

    • Develop an emergency plan and procedures to address the potential hazards that could impact your business.
    • Review all existing plans and procedures to determine whether all plans are in agreement.
    • Identify your company’s most critical business processes and take steps to protect them.
    • Determine the financial and operational impact if your business must shut down for a day, a week, or an entire revenue period. Is this impact minor or catastrophic?
    • Establish an emergency plan with your suppliers.
    • Establish temporary relocation contingencies.
    • Determine if the business is adequately insured.
    • Create a Business Go Box and determine what vital items should be included, such as:
      • Insurance information
      • Bank information: check books, account numbers, etc.
      • Client contact list
      • Employee contact list
      • Vendor contact list
      • Computer back-ups
      • Customer files, charts, etc.

    Secure Property and Assets

    • Take necessary steps to protect your building, equipment and other assets.
    • Establish a procedure for creating computer back-ups of all vital records.
    • Perform an assessment of short-term impacts vs. permanent impacts.
    • If your business is located in a multi-tenant building, coordinate with your building management’s emergency plans.

    Establish a Communication Protocol

    • Establish procedures for your employees to report their whereabouts and status.
    • Establish procedures to communicate with customers/clients following the emergency.

Here is an interesting article I have found at We Hold These Truths.org: http://weholdthesetruths.org/modules/news/article.php?storyid=194

Economic empowerment of the people who reside in inner cities and other black communities today demands a combination of political will, visionary thinking, and organizing acumen. It requires the resurrection of a democratic media space inside black communities where spirited intra-community discussion can take place, and in which leadership can be held to account. The business class has failed. Let's move them out of the way.

      The Black Hair Care Tragicomedy
By James Clingman Jr. The saddest part about this issue is the fact that we could see this one coming. Now that it has hit its mark, right between our eyes, maybe the pain will be severe enough not only to get our attention but also to hold our attention long enough for us to rally our forces and fight back. The Black Hair Care Industry (BHCI) has, once again, become a hot topic among folks other than Koreans. Now that an investigative documentary has been produced about the industry, obviously shocking Black people once again, maybe some of us will resolve to do something to reclaim at least a portion of that vertical market. After all, the last time I checked, no one is using Black hair care products except Black folks. The documentary discloses information, none of which was news to BHCI insiders, about the ownership of stores and distribution of hair products sought and bought by Black people. The main point of the report centered on the fact that Koreans own and control, and I do mean control, the overwhelming majority of the distribution and sale of Black hair care products, which includes shampoos, conditioners, oils and creams, and those fashionable hairpieces our sisters love to wear. http://www.emergingminds.org/magazine/content/index.php?itemid=3828

      Poor People are Losers
By Imani Mance Emerging Minds Magazine This past weekend my mother came to visit and we spent a few nights staying up late with a couple of my friends laughing and joking about our childhood experiences. My friends and I are all in our mid twenties and grew up in three different parts of the country but all seemed to share similar experiences while growing up. Furthermore, when it came to material trappings we all seemed to share the same ideas about wealth, although I don’t think it was something our parents taught us. The bottom line for all of us growing up was that we didn’t want to look or be poor, and as a child the only way to know if you were poor was through what your parents bought you. We can laugh now at how ridiculous we were to feel underprivileged because our parents didn’t buy us the expensive clothes, school supplies and toys. We can laugh at our parents always asking us if we have some “fill in the blank money” for this or that. As adults we finally understand that it made no difference in the bigger scheme of things if we had the glossy Lisa Frank folders tucked away in a shiny new Trapperkeeper versus a plain purple folder in a plain three ring binder. Well, actually it did make one difference and that was to the pocketbooks of our parents. It seems that although none of our parents taught us to value the big brand names that somehow we did anyway. I am not sure if it was television or other school children that taught us this value. However, I do know that since I was about six years old I developed the erroneous notion that generic meant poor and name brand meant rich. Furthermore, somewhere between birth and six years old I also learned that I didn’t want to be thought of as poor. Given that my parents had no idea that I valued this because I wouldn’t dare throw a tantrum or beg for my mom or dad to buy the name brands, how could they have possibly taught me something different? I think the one thing that my parents and the parents of my friends could have done was explain early on what it meant to be financially responsible. I am not going to make a sweeping statement that most parents fail to educate their children about finances, but I will say that in my small microcosm of a world that I don’t know of any Black people whose parents passed down significant financial knowledge to their children. I mean don’t get me wrong, I knew the very basics, but I can’t say that when I went off to college I had any strong financial knowledge or best practices on how to spend, save, invest and donate my money. I, like many other college students, fell into the credit card trap, didn’t save any money that I earned from working and took out loans without the blink of an eye. Fortunately, my parents did teach me enough so that I did not set myself up for financial ruin although I was not on the path to financial success either. In addition, during my senior year God sent me a blessing in the form of a man that would help me change my financial life and perspective on money. It is to his credit that I am financially stable now and on the road to building lasting wealth. With that said if you are a parent or have younger siblings I want to encourage you to teach them how to be financially responsible as early as possible. Teach them to make a habit of saving a percentage of all the money that passes through their hands, giving a percentage of their money to charity, investing their money, and of course how to spend their money and get the best value from it. Of course you should live by example and practice these same habits, but also strive to learn more about building wealth yourself and begin to fill in the gaps that your parents may have left you.
