Joe Jennings, J-14 Agricultural Enterprises Best Urban Farmer (2007)4600 Sorter Drive Kansas City, Kan., KS 66104 913-287-3365 Give him an inch of soil, and Joe Jennings will go the extra mile. He may be 78 years old, but this farmer works from sunrise to sunset, making sure every nook and cranny of his eight-acre property be it a tiny strip along the gravel driveway or a parcel near the stairs to his back door is flush with organic fruits and vegetables. Nearly 10 years ago, the Texas native and longtime Kansas City resident bought the land just northwest of Kansas City, Kansas, after spending half a lifetime as a teacher. Before long, the lifelong gardener was producing so much food that he had to buy industrial-sized freezers because he still had produce left over, even after supplying the City Mission homeless shelter with all the veggies it needed. Now, Jennings runs his operation according to the community-supported-agriculture concept. City slickers subscribe for $200. He gives them a key to the front gate, and they can pick up to 500 pounds of produce over the course of the six-month harvest season. Of course, Jennings doesn't just raise second-to-none, chemical-free vegetables; he also cultivates inner-city youths. Thanks to his involvement with Camp CARVER (City Agricultural Resourceful Visionaries Entering Real Life), kids from the Kansas City core help out at J-14 Agricultural Enterprises and learn that, thanks to farmers like Jennings, even the most urban consumers don't have to look beyond their city zip code for fresh produce. http://stream.publicbroadcasting.net/production/mp3/kcur/local-kcur-602606.mp3 Be sure to schedule your spring field trips for youth early... |

| Currently, the construction of a $700M Family Vacation Resort is underway in the Village West area of Wyandotte County. Known as the Schlitterbahn development, there will be an ongoing need and opportunity for small, women, minority and locally owned business enterprises throughout its construction phase. Turner Construction is the general contractor and it is their responsibility to identify and offer subcontracting opportunities to M/W/LBEs. To get your foot into the door of doing business with this friendly firm, the Turner School of Construction Management hosts a program for M/W/DBE firms throughout the year. Space is limited to 40 participants and a firm must be selected based off of other criteria as found on the attachment. Beyond the opportunity to learn about Turner's expectations of contractors they do business with, participants learn to locate resources within the construction industry, identify challenges of being a contractors, define necessary elements for being a contractor, and describe the fundamentals of estimating. A completed registration form must be completed and turned in by Feb. 20, 2008 and sessions will begin March 4th. Classes are in the evenings on Tuesday from 6-8pm and there is no cost to selected participants. For more information about Turner Construction's Construction Management program for M/W/DBEs, call Teresa Reiling at 816-283-0555. Only individuals comitted to attending all sessions are encouraged to inquire and participate. IBSA, a nonprofit training provider of entrepreneurial development and support services to aspiring business owners will be coordinating their WIA funded program to coincide with Turner's construction management training. The agency can provide course work to complete a feasibility and functional business plan, assist in homework assignments, help review and prepare request for bid documents and assist in other development areas as needed. For information on completing Turner's program in conjunction with IBSA's program call 913-240-6247 or by email at ibsakc@myway.com |
| We help educators and authors develop online courses for one of the largest and fastest-growing audiences in the history of education. Any courses we help you develop will be marketed to millions of adult learners by our network of more than 1,500 top universities, colleges, and other accredited institutions of adult education. In return, you will receive a percentage of all revenues derived from your course. There is a catch, however. In order to ensure the quality and continued success of our program, we can only work with a limited number of applicants each year. As much as we'd like to do so, we cannot accept every application that we receive. The schools in our network believe that instructors are the most important part of the education equation, and they depend on us to select only the best, brightest, and most motivated candidates for our program. We feel that great teaching, like great painting, is an art. Very few people possess the rare and almost magical mix of talents required to master the art of education. If you have the patience, the creativity, the compassion, and the desire to truly involve and inspire our students, we invite you to apply for a teaching position with ed2go. http://www.ed2go.com/teach.html Small Business

=============================== Synergy: refers to the phenomenon in which two or more discrete influences or agents acting together create an effect greater than that predicted by knowing only the separate effects of the individual agents. Human synergy relates to interacting humans. For example, say person A alone is too short to reach an apple on a tree and person B is too short as well. Once person B sits on the shoulders of person A, they are more than tall enough to reach the apple. In this example, the product of their synergy would be one apple. Another case would be two politicians. If each is able to gather one million votes on their own, but together they were able to appeal to 2.5 million voters, their synergy would have produced 500,000 more votes than had they each worked independently. Synergy usually arises when a group of people with different complementary skills cooperate (Umoja=Unity). In business, cooperation of people with organizational and technical skills happens very often. In general, the most common reason why people cooperate is that it brings a synergy. |
